Chapter IV
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The method used in our study is descriptive method of research. The descriptive method of research describes the status of events, people or people as they exist. Our study assesses the impact of the University of the Philippines Cebu College on its fourth year students A. Y. 2010-2011. We would like to know if there were changes in the students’ views and principles since they entered UPCC. To be able to assess the impact we have included some variables in our study such as political and social involvement, critical thinking, well-roundedness, and sense of responsibility as “Iskolar ng Bayan”. These variables are what make up the questionnaire which is in a survey form.
Sampling Procedure
We used stratified sampling. We grouped the fourth year students A.Y. 2010-2011 of the University of the Philippines Cebu College according to their division. The divisions are Computer Science, Humanities, Management, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Social Science. From these groups we randomly picked out ten respondents each.
Research Participants
The respondents were fourth year students of A.Y. 2010-2011 of the University of the Philippines Cebu College. Ten students were randomly picked from each division of the college: Computer Science Division, Humanities Division, Management Division, Natural Science and Mathematics Division, and Social Science Division.
Research Instrument
The questionnaire used is divided into five parts. The first part asks about the personal information of the respondent. The second part is about their political and social involvement, both before they enter UP and in the present. The third part is about the well-roundedness of the respondent. The fourth part is about the sense of responsibility of the respondent being “Iskolar ng Bayan”. The last part measures the critical thinking of the respondent.
Data Collection
After we made the questionnaires, we gave them randomly to ten fourth year students of A.Y. 2010-2011 of each division in the University of the Philippines Cebu College. The survey was done in one week. After we gathered the necessary data, we proceeded in analyzing the data.
Data Analysis
The data collected were recorded in a tabular form. This made the analysis of data easier. The data will be our guide for us to be able to conclude whether UPCC really has impacts on its students or none.
